In a local area network (LAN), a network switch acts like a bridge between different network devices, such as switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access points (WAPs). It also connects client devices, like computers, servers, IP cameras, and IP printers. This is where all the network devices can join each other.

What does a switch do?

A switch keeps track of which Media Access Control (MAC) addresses have been seen on each switch port and then changes the data frames between them. An NIC’s MAC address is a mark that is permanently etched into its hardware. With a MAC address, each network card and port on a switch or router is unique. The switch learns the source and target MAC addresses from the data frames and stores them in a table. It looks at the table to figure out where to send the frames it gets. It sends the frame to all switch ports at once if it gets a target MAC address that it doesn’t have in its table. This is called broadcasting. It stores the MAC address in a table when it gets an answer, so it doesn’t have to flood again.

Some people call routers “Gates.” They are gear that move packets between networks and connect your network to the Internet. There are a lot of routers that make up the Internet.

What does a router do?

A router checks each packet’s source and destination IP addresses. The router then looks up the packet’s target address in its IP routing table and sends it to another router or a switch. The process continues until it reaches the target IP address and sends a response. If there is more than one way to get to an IP address, routers can pick the one that costs the least. If there is no target in the routing table for the packet, it will be sent to the default router if it has one. The packet will be dropped if it doesn’t have a location.

What routers do to get packets from one IP address to another

Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will usually give you a router. Your Internet service provider gives you one public IP address for your computer. The public IP address lets people outside your network know who you are when browsing the Internet. Your private IP address is kept safe. On the other hand, your PC, laptop, iPad, TV media box, and network copier all have different private IP addresses. If not, the router won’t tell which device asks for what.

How Does a Router Work?

Routers can understand various networks. Besides Ethernet, the most popular network, there are many other types, like ATM and Token Ring. The networks encrypt data differently, meaning they can’t talk to each other directly. These messages come from different networks, but routers can “translate” them so they can talk to each other.

A router splits a network into two or more smaller networks linked together. The router doesn’t let the spread go from one subnet to another.

Each gadget has its features, and there are a lot of things that affect the choice. For example, an L3 switch is too expensive and doesn’t do enough for a small network with 10 to 100 people. A good cutter can do the job well and not cost too much. On the other hand, routers can have switching units that can make them work like an L3 switch if that’s what you need. So, when choosing a device, you should consider how it can be scaled, how resilient it is, what software features it has, how well its hardware works, and so on.

In an emergency, firewalls are walls that are used to stop fires. A network firewall is a wall that separates an intranet or LAN from the Internet. A network firewall usually keeps important data inside a private LAN and stops attacks from outside. Without a firewall, routers just send traffic between two networks without checking it. Firewalls, however, watch the traffic and stop any unwanted traffic from getting through.
